To the Kermit ISD family and community of Kermit. Last Friday, we were made aware that the Kermit Police Department was investigating threats made against the high school. The aggressive proactive investigation by our local police revealed no specific evidence of a credible threat at this time. However, since these threats were rumored to involve weapons, and in light of recent events, in an abundance of caution, I decided to implement additional safety protocols at all three campuses. These safety protocols involved the Kermit Police Department, Winkler County Sheriff’s Department, and the Department of Public Safety. There are two reasons a message was not sent out prior to today. First, the threat was not credible enough to warrant such a message. Second, we did not want to tip off bad actors to our security measures. I want to commend and thank our parents and students for their calm approach to this situation. I also want to commend and thank our local law enforcement agencies for their aggressive and proactive approach to keeping our school and students safe. At this time, we feel there is no credible threat to our students or staff; therefore, school will continue as scheduled. If there had been a credible threat, you would have received word through our official notification system Parents Square and/or various social media posts. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we take all steps necessary for the safety and well-being. As the saying goes, if you see something; say something. Please let my office or a campus administrator know if you are aware of any information regarding threats toward our school, students, or staff. It is a great day to be a Kermit Yellowjacket and living in the great community of Kermit, Texas.
